Last year, our class was assigned a group project, and I was paired with a boy named Eric, who rarely spoke in class and always sat alone during lunch. Judging him by his silence, I assumed he was indifferent and would contribute nothing. Determined not to rely on him, I secretly planned to finish most of the work myself, convinced that cooperating with him would be a waste of time. As it turned out, I could not have been more mistaken. Not only did Eric submit his part on time, but he also offered insightful suggestions that made our presentation far more compelling than I had imagined. It was his quiet dedication, rather than loud confidence, that truly impressed our teacher. Humbled by this experience, I realized how unfair it is to judge others based solely on first impressions. Since then, I have made a conscious effort to look beyond appearances, understanding that everyone has hidden strengths worth discovering.
這裡原本可以寫成 'Because I judged him by his silence, I assumed...',但用分詞構句 'Judging him by his silence, I assumed...' Hearing the news, I felt extremely anxious.'
一般寫法會是 'Eric not only submitted his part on time but also offered...',但把 Not only 移到句首並倒裝,能製造語氣上的強調效果,顯示寫作者對句型掌握度高,也讓文章讀起來更有層次、更正式。 Not only did she apologize, but she also offered to help me fix the mistake.'
這是標準的 It is/was...that... 強調句型,用來凸顯句子中某個特定成分(這裡強調的是『his quiet dedication』這個主詞補語/受詞概念),比起平鋪直敘的 'His quiet dedication, rather than loud confidence, truly impressed our teacher' 更能讓讀者注意到對比重點。 It is our daily habits, not government policies alone, that determine the future of this planet.'
這是被動形式的分詞構句,原句可還原為 'Because I was humbled by this experience, I realized...',由於主詞 I 是被『humble(使謙卑)』這個動作影響,所以用過去分詞 Humbled 開頭,而非現在分詞。 Inspired by her courage, I decided to face my own fears.'
The trip could not have been more rewarding.'
