In recent years, many schools have adopted a policy requiring students to hand in their cell phones at the beginning of the school day, only returning them after classes or school ends. The main reason behind this rule is that administrators believe phones distract students from their studies and, worse, encourage cheating during exams. Having witnessed countless classmates sneaking glances at group chats under their desks, I can see why teachers feel this measure is necessary. That said, reactions among students are far from unanimous. While some admit that being separated from their phones actually helps them concentrate better, others complain bitterly, arguing that they should have the right to manage their own devices and that emergencies—such as a sudden family matter—might arise when they desperately need to reach someone. It is this tension between academic focus and personal autonomy that fuels ongoing debate on campus. As for my own stance, I am only partially in favor of this policy. On one hand, I understand its intention to minimize distraction; on the other hand, collecting all phones indiscriminately seems like an overly rigid, one-size-fits-all solution that fails to address individual needs. Were the rule more flexible, it would surely be easier for students to accept. Therefore, instead of a blanket ban, I propose a system in which phones are allowed to remain with students but must be switched to silent mode and placed in a designated pouch on each desk during class, visible to teachers yet still within reach. This way, should a true emergency occur, students could still be contacted immediately, while the temptation to check social media would be significantly reduced simply by having the phone out of hand. Not only would such a compromise respect students' sense of responsibility, but it would also preserve the order that teachers originally sought to maintain. In my opinion, trust and flexibility, rather than strict confiscation, are what truly cultivate self-discipline in the long run.
這裡原本的完整句子應該是「Because I have witnessed countless classmates sneaking glances at group chats under their desks, I can see why...」,把「Because I have witnessed」簡化成「Having witnessed」(完成式分詞,表示動作發生在主要子句之前),文句立刻變得更流暢有層次,也展現你能掌握時態先後關係,而不是只會用簡單的 because 子句。學生可以套用在任何需要先敘述原因再講結果的句子上,例如寫環保作文時可以說「Having seen the plastic waste piling up on the beach, I realized how urgent the problem truly is.」
(If the rule were more flexible, it would be easier...),但省略了 if,並將 were 提到主詞前面形成倒裝,這是正式書面英文中常見且高級的寫法,閱卷者看到會立刻覺得你文法底子紮實。一般學生只會寫「If the rule were more flexible」,但用倒裝版本「Were the rule more flexible」更簡潔有力,也展現你熟悉假設語氣的進階變化(was/were 倒裝僅限於 if 子句用 were 時)。 的假設句時,都可以嘗試把 if 拿掉、were 提前,例如「Were more parks built in the city, residents would have more space to relax.」
這是「It is...that...」 學生在結論句或想要特別強調某個重點時,都可以套用這個句型,例如寫到環境議題時可以說「It is human greed that lies at the root of environmental destruction.」
一般寫法可能是「Such a compromise would not only respect students' sense of responsibility but also preserve the order...」,但把 Not only 移到句首並倒裝,語氣更強烈、更正式,是閱卷老師眼中的加分亮點。學生可以在列舉兩個優點或原因時套用這個句型,例如「Not only does regular exercise improve physical health, but it also boosts mental well-being.」
學生可以平時整理一些評論政策、制度時常用的進階詞彙庫,例如 arbitrary(武斷的)、counterproductive(適得其反的)、one-size-fits-all(一體適用的),在議論文中適時使用,例如「A one-size-fits-all curriculum fails to address students' diverse needs.」
