Walk down any street in Taiwan and you will spot at least one bubble tea shop—often several—within a few minutes' walk. It is hardly surprising, then, that so many young people treat a cup of hand-shaken tea as a daily necessity rather than an occasional treat. The most obvious reason for this craze lies in the sheer variety of flavors and toppings available: from classic pearl milk tea to brown sugar fresh milk and fruity green tea, there is always something new to try. Equally important is the role bubble tea plays in students' social lives. Buying a drink together after school has become a small ritual among friends, a way of bonding that costs little time or money. Not to be overlooked is the convenience factor—with shops practically on every corner and mobile ordering apps just a tap away, satisfying a craving has never been easier. Were it not for this combination of taste, sociability, and accessibility, bubble tea would hardly have become such a fixture of youth culture. This love affair with sweet drinks, however, is not without its costs. Having consumed my fair share of bubble tea throughout high school, I have come to realize how easily the sugar adds up; a single cup can contain more sugar than the daily recommended limit, quietly contributing to weight gain and even the rising rate of diabetes among teenagers. Just as worrying is the environmental toll: mountains of disposable plastic cups and straws are discarded every day, most of which end up in landfills or, worse, the ocean. If this trend continues unchecked, both our health and our environment will keep paying the price. Fortunately, a simple yet effective solution is within reach—shops could offer a meaningful discount to customers who bring their own reusable cups, while schools could run campaigns encouraging students to choose less sugar, say half or seventy percent, as the default option. Only by making the healthier and greener choice the easier one can we hope to enjoy our favorite drinks without regret.
這是「Were it not for + 名詞」的倒裝假設語氣,用來取代較平淡的 'If it were not for...'。 這裡用在議論文的段落收尾句,能把前面列舉的三個原因(口味、社交、便利)做一個有力的總結,比單純寫 'If there were no such combination of taste, sociability, and accessibility, bubble tea would not have become so popular.' Were it not for the convenience of plastic bags, people might reduce their usage more quickly.'
比起寫成 'Because I have consumed a lot of bubble tea throughout high school, I have come to realize...',用分詞構句可以省略連接詞與重複主詞,讀起來更精簡、更像母語者的寫作方式,也展現出時態掌握能力(完成式分詞表示「早於」主要子句動作)。 Having volunteered at an animal shelter for two years, I have learned the importance of patience.'
這樣寫比平鋪直敘的 'The environmental toll is also worrying.' Just as alarming is the rate at which coral reefs are disappearing.'
If this habit of overusing plastic continues unabated, our oceans will suffer irreversible damage.'
