Among all the ways to read, it is printed books that I turn to more often than electronic ones. Whenever I have a free afternoon, I like to curl up on my bed with a paperback novel, a cup of tea within reach, and let myself drift into the story for hours without checking any screen. I do, however, read e-books occasionally, mostly on my phone when I am commuting on the MRT or waiting in line somewhere, since a digital library of hundreds of titles can be carried in my pocket. Still, were I to choose a single format to read before going to sleep every night, I would always pick a physical book, as its pages do not glow with the harsh blue light that keeps me awake. If I had to choose between the two, I would, without hesitation, choose printed books, and I have two solid reasons for this preference. First, holding an actual book engages more of my senses: I enjoy the texture of the paper, the faint smell of ink, and even the small satisfaction of watching a bookmark move steadily toward the back cover, all of which make reading feel like a complete experience rather than merely scrolling through text. Second, printed books demand my full attention in a way that e-books rarely do. Not only can a notification pop up the moment I open a reading app, but the temptation to check social media is also only a swipe away, so my concentration is constantly interrupted. A printed book, by contrast, offers no such distractions; it simply sits in my hands, inviting me to keep reading page after page. For these reasons, despite the convenience that technology offers, it is the quiet, tactile pleasure of a paper book that I will never give up.
這是典型的「It is + 強調部分 + that + 子句」分裂句(cleft sentence),文法規則是把原本平鋪直敘的句子「I turn to printed books more often than electronic ones」拆解,把要強調的受詞「printed books」抽出放在 It is 和 that 之間,藉此凸顯該訊息是全句的重點。 學生可以在任何議論文的破題句套用這個公式,例如寫「我比較喜歡運動」可寫成「It is exercising outdoors that I enjoy the most」,立刻讓句子更有文采。
這句用了假設語氣的倒裝形式,原本的條件句「If I were to choose...」 這類假設情境時都可以套用,例如:「Were I given more time, I would travel around the world.」
這種句型比單純用 and 連接兩個句子(例如:A notification can pop up, and the temptation to check social media is also there)更有層次感與強調效果,能展現作者刻意安排語序以加強語氣的能力,是學測作文中常見的加分句型之一。學生可以在列舉兩個遞進的理由或缺點時使用,例如:「Not only does fast food taste good, but it is also very convenient.」
句中「a cup of tea within reach」其實是省略了 being 的獨立分詞構句(with + 名詞 + 形容詞/介系詞片語的獨立主格),用來補充說明主要動作發生時的背景畫面,文法上等同於「while a cup of tea is within reach」,但省略連接詞和 be 動詞後顯得更精簡流暢。 學生可以在描述情境、營造畫面時套用這個公式:「with + 名詞 + 形容詞/副詞片語」,例如:「She sat by the window, her eyes fixed on the rain.」
這同樣是 It is...that... 學生可以在結論段刻意重複開頭使用過的句型來強化主旨,例如文章開頭寫「It is kindness that makes the world better」,結尾也可以呼應「it is kindness, not wealth, that I will always choose to practice」。
