Last Sunday, my family decided to visit a famous scenic spot. Humming a cheerful tune, my father loaded the suitcase into the trunk while my mother and I stood by the car, looking forward to the trip with excitement. Unfortunately, as soon as we got on the road, we found ourselves trapped in heavy traffic. Surrounded by countless vehicles, our car crawled forward inch by inch. My father gripped the steering wheel nervously, and I could not help wondering whether we would ever arrive. After what seemed like an eternity, we finally reached the entrance of the attraction, only to be greeted by a massive crowd. Not only were there people as far as the eye could see, but the line barely seemed to be moving at all. Standing at the very end of the queue, my parents exchanged a look of disbelief, while I, utterly disappointed, almost burst into tears. Just when we were wondering whether to give up, my father suggested that we visit a nearby, less crowded park instead. To our surprise, the park turned out to be a hidden gem, offering a peaceful lake and blooming flowers. In the end, what had begun as a frustrating morning turned into one of the most memorable family outings we had ever had.

Humming a cheerful tune, my father loaded the suitcase into the trunk

原本可能寫成「My father hummed a cheerful tune and loaded the suitcase into the trunk.」,用分詞構句後語氣更連貫、更有畫面感,也展現句構變化的能力,是閱卷老師喜歡看到的進階技巧。學生可以在描述人物同時做兩件事時套用,例如:「Smiling brightly, she opened the door to greet her guests.」

Surrounded by countless vehicles, our car crawled forward inch by inch.

比起平鋪直敘的「Our car was surrounded by countless vehicles and crawled forward.」,這種寫法更精簡且有畫面張力。學生可以套用在描述人或物處於某種狀態時,例如:「Exhausted by the long journey, the travelers finally fell asleep.」

not only…but also 倒裝句Not only were there people as far as the eye could see, but the line barely seemed to be moving at all.

相較於平鋪直敘的「There were not only people as far as the eye could see, but the line also barely seemed to be moving.」,倒裝版本更具文學性與節奏感。學生可以在想強調兩件同時存在的負面或正面狀況時使用,例如:「Not only did it rain heavily, but the wind also grew stronger.」

so/such 結構的替代表現 only to Vwe finally reached the entrance of the attraction, only to be greeted by a massive crowd

這比單純寫「we reached the entrance and saw a massive crowd」更能傳達出情緒的落差與諷刺意味,增加故事的戲劇張力。學生可以廣泛運用在任何「努力後卻換來失望結果」的情境,例如:「She studied all night, only to fail the test.」

I could not help wondering whether we would ever arrive

此句包含兩個文法重點:一是「cannot help + Ving」表示「忍不住做某事」,二是「wondering whether + 子句」為間接問句,須用「whether/if + 主詞 + 動詞」的直述語序,而非疑問句語序(不能說whether would we arrive)。 Would we arrive?」 學生可以套用在描寫角色內心糾結時,例如:「He couldn't help wondering whether he had made the right decision.」

倒裝強調句 what 子句what had begun as a frustrating morning turned into one of the most memorable family outings we had ever had

此句使用「what」引導的名詞子句作主詞,將「a frustrating morning turning into a memorable outing」的對比濃縮成一個主詞子句,搭配過去完成式had begun與had ever had,清楚呈現時間先後與情感轉折,是總結故事、呼應開頭的經典寫法。比起簡單寫「The morning was frustrating, but in the end it became a memorable outing.」,這種句型更具文學性與邏輯層次感,常用於文章結尾點題。學生可以在任何「先苦後甘」的故事結尾套用,例如:「What had seemed like a disaster turned out to be a blessing in disguise.」
